July 29, 2010-Heroic Students Earn Scholarships

The Dana Christmas Scholarship for Heroism, a state-funded scholarship that has been handed out to students for their bravery annually since 2001, will live to honor more student heroes thanks to the PSEG Foundation, the philanthropic arm of PS&G, the utility company. PSEG will fund the program, allowing it to continue for at least one more year. Five students received the $10,000 scholarship on July 23, 2010 at the PSEG headquarters in Newark. Among the winners is Zasha Aquirre, 19, of Egg Harbor Township. While visiting her father in Colombia, Aquirre and her family were attacked in their car by a team of thieves. Aquirre, then 15, was shot four times, but still shielded her 12-year-old sister from the gunfire. Her father was killed in the attack. Aquirre will use her scholarship to study culinary arts at Atlantic Cape Community College.
